Review of The Rescuers (1977) by Theadore C — 06 Aug 2007
As a kid, I didn't really "get" this movie. It lacked the polished animation of its sequel and the memorability of Disney's other films (interesting, considering it was the highest-grossing animated film of all time for almost ten years).
But that's probably because the drama-driven Rescuers is more in tune with a thriller than a fun-filled kid movie. Topics such as orphans and adoption never entered my 10-year old mind in a serious light.
Yet, viewing it now, The Rescuers is a really good movie. Touching songs, a musical score that fits whatever's happening on-screen like a glove, and perfect voice acting are all there; it just pales in viewers' minds because there are a lot of other Disney films that are even better.
Some controversy with a topless woman in a few frames in the 1999 re-release probably didn't help its legacy, either (read about that on Wikipedia, if you desire). Nonetheless, this is still a great movie and I'm glad I watched it again after a decade of ignoring it.
