Review of The Replacement Killers (1998) by Richard S — 21 Jun 2009
Mindless flashy action thriller, and hugely entertaining. Chow Yun Fat is marvellous, perhaps not quite as good as in The Killers. What a great James Bond he would make. The film is fascinating to look at with arresting and often very humorous camera angles which ensure that the extreme violence is never very believable and therefore not in any way morally troubling.
It has the same extreme kinetic energy as a John Woo film, and I think I saw his name as one of the film's producers in the credits. Not as balletic as the better wuxia films (eg House of Flying Daggers) but very much from the same sort of ballpark.
Highly recommended.
