Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Sean P — 13 Nov 2011
A well-made adaptation of a wonderful novel. It doesn't reach the depths or subtle power of the source material (it's actually a bit heavy-handed for my tastes when it comes to the drama department, where the book was understated) but it's brilliantly acted by both Hopkins and Thompson, and surprisingly well-photographed considering I think most Merchant Ivory productions are pretty pedestrian.
It was well-paced, though some may find it slow, and very well written considering how much of the original story had to be excised and how they had to bring Stevens's inner thoughts into the foreground.
