Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Janelle A — 10 Nov 2007
Another James Ivory offering; they do an excellent job turning the long-winded English story-of-manners into this long-winded English film-of-manners. Delicate, dark, and surely not for anyone who is not willing to put a few hours into a movie whose climax involves someone trying to see what book someone else is reading.
Acting at its most refined, I say! I couple this film with Howard's End--similar brilliant cast, similar themes of British class and why they are too polite to experience joy.
