Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Mark S — 17 Nov 2007
This may be my all-time favorite movie. Anthony Hopkins is my favorite male actor, and Emma Thomson is my favorite actress. The script is terrific; the scenery and costumes are simply elegant. The relationship between Hopkins as "Mr.
Stevens" and Thompson as Lord Darlington's housekeeper is a rich tapestry of withheld emotion. The rich cinematography is classic Merchant/Ivory! Finally, the story -- a "backstory" for Neville Chamberlain's failed attempt to appease Hitler and the Nazi's prior to WWII -- is fascinating.
Sadly, I believe this was Christopher Reeve's last movie before his tragic accident. If you haven't yet seen it, do so without delay!
