Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Gabriel C — 21 Jun 2009
Stevens as a character of someone repressed to the point of hiding his thoughts, or his feelings, is very powerful, thoughtful and interesting and that is enough to make you watch the movie. But sadly, such potential is not developed, and the subtleties of the movie, one of its main characteristics, are replaced by some rough scenes, very forced turns of the plot, to make the movie go (miss Kenton realizing she's not that young and she should consider other options as Stevens won't make any move, or the very ridiculous political issue, poorly reflected).
Adding this major issues to the slow paced rythm and that Ivory trademark way of filming (not my taste) results on a not very satisfaying, despite not unpleasant and interesting, film.
