Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Chit-Wa Sarah T — 26 Apr 2010
A brilliant analysis of the totalitarian aspects of British class culture and its breakdown in the face of radical cultural changes that test its flaws. Stevens predicament reveals how his role and its expectations leave him completely unaware of the seedier undertones of the order he serves with such devotion.
Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson give great performances, as has been said before.
Underrate highlights are James Fox, Christopher Reeves, Tim Peggot-Smith and Hugh Grant. Hugh Grant, while not in many scenes, nevertheless gives what I find to be his best performance ever, in his role as Lord Darlington's caring but critically questioning godson.
Merchant Ivory's magnum opus.
