Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Steven C — 12 Feb 2012
The movie is depressing and is interesting to study the theme how some cultures can produce constraints to personal happiness. It hit a chord and although boring it is realistic and doesn't feel the need to produce a happy ending.
. You can dig further into it ..for example I was examining Stevens devotion and professionalism to his employer. It raises the question how much do you morally sacrifice to stick to your own personal work ethics.
ie) The scene where his employer had his servants fired because they where Jewish, he was trying to keep peace with the germans and was treated like a pawn. Stevens did not question his employer due to his loyalty and work ethic ,he risked the girls lives and they where deported back to Germany and admitted later he was wrong for not speaking up.
This is just tapping the surface regarding what you could study in the book and film.
