Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Sarah N — 24 Mar 2008
This is my favorite Hopkins film. Period. Some say it's too slow and boring and yeah, I have fallen asleep watching it, I'll admit... but the performances are amazing. You get the feeling that the entire film could go without dialogue and you would still know EXACTLY what's going on. It's also compelling as a romance because, like the highly censored films from the 30's and 40's, it focuses more on the chemistry between the leads than on actual physical contact. And that, of course, intensifies even the smallest gestures and facial expression.
I love shit like this.
