Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Cal ( — 07 Nov 2007
'The Remains of the Day' is a story that follows Anthony Hopkins as a loyal butler named James Stevens who has sacrificed his body and soul to service in the years post World War II. His employer, Lord Darlington (Fox), resides in Darlington Hall; an enormous manor out in the country.
James' world of loyalty and manners is tested when a new housekeeper, Mary Kenton (Thompson), arrives as a new member of the staff. James slowly falls in love with Mary, but his obsession with duty obstructs this romance.
A remarkable movie that, although slow, has extremely engaging performances and really good directing. The problem...the film is straight-up drama and doesn't seem to be as concerned with the viewer's entertainment.
Still, not too say that it's a bad film. 'The Remains of the Day' is a magnificent Merchant-Ivory production, but marred by overlength and its slow pace.
