Review of The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2013) by Matthew M — 04 Jun 2013
While there is a great idea to a story here, there is just too many flaws to ignore. The pacing of the film is incredibly slow, to emphaise the importance of reflecting or absorbing this life changing moments.
Unfortunately these moments are rot with cliches and knowing where the story bookends gives you far too much of an idea of what is going to happen. This leads to knowing whats going to happen and waiting on how and when.
The problem is the when can take far too long and the how is often obvious or not impactful enough. The character does not really go through a slow change. Events happen and he doesnt really react or they feel unearned.
The film builds up to a climax that whimpers out and reiterates the thesis of the film. Makes me really want to read the novel.... but not watch the movie again.
