Hammy acting and some goofy plotting don't help, but this is a fun monster movie, none the less. A pretty cool creature design and a cool setting make up for a lot of shortfalls in the script. It has a similar vibe to other movies of that era (Species, Mimic, etc.
). It's from the early days of CGI, when they still used a lot of puppets and suits, so things still looked like they were actually there (because they were). But the CGI is often pretty wonky and obvious.
