Review of The Ref (1994) by Kent W — 28 Jun 2017
Funniest of all the Christmas movies. Leary is his usual sharp-tongued self. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis are wonderful. A supporting cast of Christine Baranski and Glynis Johns complete an all-star group of actors in this little-known film.
The film explores the dark side of relationships and family wherein Gus (Leary) kidnaps the Chasseur family in an attempt to escape from a botched robbery. The bickering, near-divorce Chasseur couple (Spacey and Davis) prove unable to stop bickering for 5 minutes, even when faced with an armed criminal threatening them.
Produces such all-time classic lines as, "I hijacked my #$@ing parents.", "So you too are a liar. Capital 'L', small 'i', small 'a', small 'r' , period.", "Your husband ain't dead, lady - he's hiding.", and "Then don't eat it.".
Highly recommended for anyone with a sense of humor and a disfunctional family (i.e. everyone).
