Review of The Red Violin (1998) by Naisha G — 03 Jun 2008
Never has a movie been so engaging and incorporates so many thematical elements to create a superb piece of storytelling. The movie of course centers on The Red Violin, the most perfectly crafted violin by an Italian with a curse to it. The story starts at the auction in 1999 but backtracks to the Violin's creation, and then goes into over three centuries of the Violin's history, including about five different stories each in the five different languages. This movie is so wonderful because of it's use of history, different cultures, and of course music. Each story is connected not only by the Violin itself, but also by the beautiful theme repeated in each character's life (the whole score of the movie is in violin :] ) and also by the tarot cards from the beginning (have always had a strange intrigue about tarot cards) and of course the auction which has representatives from each past there at the auction. (It is also here were Samuel Jackson's character is introduced).
A truly beautfiul movie I love it's incorporation of music, history, culture, languages, and just everything about it makes it perfect. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes stories.
