Review of The Red Badge of Courage (1951) by Trevor R — 21 Mar 2008
This film is more famous for the behind the scene's drama that took place than the film itself. After a bad preview, the bosses at MGM took the film away from Director John Huston, recut it themselves, and gave us 69 minutes of a very good but not great film.
Based on the book by Stephen Crane, this Civil War film has some striking moments and excellent battle scenes, but some of the charaters are really cliched and I did some heavy duty cringing at some of the dialogue spoken.
It would be interesting to see a the version of the film the way Huston intended it, but I have a feeling that will never happen.
