Review of The Red Badge of Courage (1951) by Noel K — 11 Apr 2009
John Houston's interpretation of Stephan Crane's novel about a young man's first encounter with the realities of war during the War Between the States (Civil War). The narration and tight close up shots of the protagonist (expressing varied emotions of fear, doubt, horror, bravery, lunacy) is real old school film making you don't see any more.
The battle sequences are just amazing; pure spectacle film making. Audie Murphy (The Youth) who is real life was a WWII veteran (the most decorated soldier) does a great job bringing Crane's character to life.
