Review of The Reader (2008) by Briain D — 25 Dec 2011
As a huge fan of the novel, Der Vorleser, I had big expectations for this film. It also had a lot to live up to. However, it did a great job. Kate Winslet gives a wonderful performance as Hanna Schmitz and David Kross' performance is stellar too.
Despite some flaws (for example, failing to adequately demonstrate the physical and mental control Hanna had over Michael), the film generally captures the spirit of the novel and portrays its message effectively.
The controversial message that Germans were also victims of the Second World War.
