Review of The Reader (2008) by Harold W — 14 Jul 2010
I know not what film the critics saw, but I don't think it was this, allow me to read the consensus: 'Despite Kate Winslet's superb portrayal, The Reader suggests an emotionally distant, Oscar-baiting historical drama'. I didn't see an oscar-baiting drama, I saw an audacious, poetic and subtle powerhouse of a film with subtly superb peformances and an original screenplay. The information was not expressed blatantly but expressed through facial expressions and intense acting.
Perhaps this film is before it's time and not appreciated and perhaps it will be appreciated in the future. It does require repeated viewings. 82/100.
