Review of The Reader (2008) by Emily D — 13 Oct 2013
Kate Winslet is fantastic, always. Every year she is nominated for an Oscar (including Titanic) I was giddy as can be, because she's that good and she deserves a stupid man of gold to put on her mantel.
Which is why I was surprised she won an Oscar for this role. I honestly didn't see anything spectacular about her performance. On the contrary her shining moments were having a quizzical brow and a slight German accent. I think the Academy has a hard on for anything historical or musical.
Don't get me wrong she's good but she's not fantastic in this. That's the overall problem with this movie, is that nothing was moving. There's a strong love story, a strong historical story, but I felt we were just aimlessly wandering throughout different time periods of their lives.
All the key elements are there but an hour into the movie I just wanted to turn it off (mind you I do have the flu and I'm kind of irritated because Anne of Green Gables hasn't finished downloading) Taking all that into account maybe I just wasn't "seeing things clearly".
The movie is shown in three segments, the first being their love affair (which has this lovely dark array to it) the second being her trial, the third being her demise.
I'm going to stop this tirade now because I can feel my headache coming back.
