Review of The Razor's Edge (1946) by Steve L — 25 Nov 2007
Disapointing. While the 1984 remake was flawed, it was actually better than the original by a large margin. While the newer version took many creative liberties, and was at times melodramatic, the original is guilty of the opposite.
The characters displayed all the emotion of cardboard cutouts. This adaptation captured none of the emotional and spiritual turmoil of the central characters. I grant that Larry Darrell is not the easiest character to portray, but I think that Bill Murray's over exuberance in the role is to be prefered to Tyrone Powers' uninspiring performance.
Aside from the acting, this was far more textually acurate than the remake, possibly to it's detriment. It's a shame, because the story has so much potential.
