Very clearly the finest tribute to Edgar Allan Poe's contributions to poetic horrors that have become time-tested classic films (especially those by Hammer Studios, Director Terence Fisher and actors Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Vincent Price; as well as earlier classics from Universal Studios, Director James Whale and actors Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price).

Director McTeigue's 2012 version, starring John Cusack as Poe himself is primarily about Poe. I'd even go so far to call it a biopic. Whether or not the facts of Poe's life are revealed through this version, I found within this film a much clearer image of Poe the author, the 1st American author to earn money for poetry, and Poe the loving human being.

Thus, I feel that since this film expands upon general public knowledge of Poe, through a fine performance by Cusack, it's rivetting and well worth owning.
