Review of The Raven (2012) by Thomas W — 18 Oct 2012
It is most unfortunate that The Raven turns out to be such a yawnish bore of a film as it is one that had tremendous potential. It says a lot that I saw the film months ago and forgot to write anything about it .
.. and now it is almost all forgotten. It is not a memorable movie other than knowing it isn't one that lingers in your head after seeing it. John Cusack (High Fidelity, Say Anything) plays Edgar Allen Poe whose writings are being ripped off and re-created as real-life murders! Oh, the horror! Luke Evans (The Immortals, Clash of the Titans) plays a detective on the ever-evolving case and Poe's romantic interest, Emily (Alice Eve - Men in Black 3, She's Out of My League) appears to be the killer's next intended victim! There is too much here and not enough at the same time .
.. too much emphasis is placed on trying to create some gothic horror that other more important plot points are ignored. I remember really wanting to like this one, and that might have been the problem -- perhaps the expectations were simply too high.
It should have been better, this I know. There was promise here; but also much let-down ...
