Review of The Raven (2012) by Dan H — 06 Jan 2013
There is indeed a good film buried somewhere in this mess, but The Raven fails to find it. It may be cool to see Poe's classic stories brought to grisly life, but the story that ties everything together isn't as strong as it should be.
The first two acts are dull and bland beyond belief, but luckily the third act is where the film finally becomes engaging. Cusack's Poe is a good character, and he does an adequate job at bringing the master of horror to the big screen, but I can't help but feel that Evans' Detective Fields was a much better character (I know, sacrilege).
Overall, while it does try, The Raven in the end fails to properly bring Poe and his stories to the big screen.
