Review of The Raven (2012) by Amber H — 25 Feb 2013
After throwing an erratic mish-mash of romantic drama, police-procedural, and splatterhouse gore at the screen in the first half of the film, it eventually settles into a really very run of the mill "chase-the-clues, rescue-the-girl" affair.
Cusack's Poe is terribly out of step with the man himself, and there's a great misunderstanding of the texts referenced within. I feel that the whole tale might have worked better had it been set-up as just some "literary scholar" type lead, rather than crowbarring the tale into the last few days of Poe's life.
A truly mediocre offering from James McTeigue, showing little of the wit or class of his previous "V for Vendetta", it's unsurprising that this film went straight to DVD here in Australia.
