A very sad story and difficult to watch. Not sure that it added anything to our understanding of how badly POWs used to build the Burma railway line were treated by the Japanese. Couldn't understand how a Northern Englishman would just "happen" across a Burmese newspaper nor why that paper would publish a wartime photo of a tour guide.
Both Firth and Kidman appear distinctly uncomfortable with this supposedly true story. Australians struggle with the British stiff-upper lip both in portrayal and in empathy. One day someone will make a great movie about Stockholm syndrome that gives us useful insights.
This isn't it.
