A harrowing and emotional effort that has the makings of an incredible drama. Let down by an occasionally lacklustre screenplay, Nicole Kidman's character lack of relevance to the plot and lack of focus in the flashback sequences.
Hiroyuki Sanada and Tanroh Ishida both give excellent performances and Colin Firth manages a hefty role reasonably well. Overall however it is saved by being based off an excellent true story and by being gutsy enough to do it justice.
Highly flawed, but still worth a watch.
