Review of The Railway Man (2013) by Kenneth B — 01 Mar 2014
By the time I finally got around to The Railway Man it felt like I'd seen the trailer 20 times. Unfortunately the trailer also contains a good proportion of the actual story. The result is an experience which may have been better served by a slightly less incessant marketing tactic.
That said, there are positives. Jeremy Irvine is the standout among the cast as the young Eric Lomax and the film isn't afraid to be brutal when necessary. Ultimately the downside is perhaps that the film is at its best during the flashbacks, unfortunately they play second fiddle to the present day narrative.
During which we receive all too little insight into the tormented soul of Firth's Lomax. It feels like it should have been more compelling and more character driven that it actually is.
