Review of The Raid 2 (2014) by Joe C — 03 Jan 2015
Holy crap, this was the grossest movie I've ever seen to date. The gore factor was unprecedented. Would hate to have cleanup duty, and the carpet stains, my god. This plays Tarantino-esquey and excels in every aspect except for the story.
It's clichÃÂ (C)d and brings nothing new to the table. It's a recycling program for stories, a short configuration, and very hard to follow. But the bottom line, on these terms, is that the story simply doesn't matter.
It was just filler filler awesome filler filler awesome. That's the entire pattern of the movie. It didn't have to make sense. The fight scenes were so intensely brutal and riveting, you were just tapping your foot waiting for the next fight scene and the wait can almost dilute your attention span.
But it's so worth the wait at the end, although I won't argue that the film should've been better edited and tighter. It did fail in trying to be complex, but I didn't care. It was like an action pornography and I love it for that.
Also I much prefer the gun fu to the kung fu. More is more with the hand-to-hand combat. Also liked who I call Batman, MC Hammer, and Captain Hook. Easy for me to remember out of the dozens of characters in this movie.
In all seriousness though, this kid, Rhama, should be the next Jackie Chan. He's a fighting machine. Epic pressure cooker of violence, and it only ramps up as the movie goes on. Its unbelievable that they can push the envelope as far as they did.
