Review of The Quiet Man (1952) by Ryan G — 03 Aug 2011
The Duke has played lots of very entertaining movies, The Quiet Man is probably his best one, and the one that raises the most challenging questions. It wonders about the issue of whether it's ever okay to fight someone, it raises the issue of honor, marriage and how to deal with bullies. What I really liked about the issues raised in this film is that the film answers how the main character deals with it and also leaves you wondering about the issues yourself. And while the film does raise some intellectual questions, it is also very entertaining to watch. The chemistry between John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara is very evident and very charming. I also really loved the plot of the film. It's very easy to follow and also at the same time doesn't feel over simplified. The Quiet Man is one of those rare experiences that absolutely engrosses you with beautiful scenery, fabulous acting, a wonderful story and a sweet romance that builds to a realistic level as the film goes on. If you love John Wayne films, or even if you're not a fan of John Wayne, this film is a must see. It's a cinematic experience I won't soon be forgetting.
9.8/10.
