Review of The Quiet Man (1952) by Daniel K — 19 May 2013
5: Films like this and How Green Was My Valley deserve much longer and more in-depth reviews, but there are times when one doesn't feel like writing. However, this is without a doubt one of my Top 25 all-time favorite films.
It is patently obvious that it held a place very close to John Fiord's heart and it shows the entire way through. This life and this village simply seem idyllic. One finds a hard time imagining a life better than this one.
The cast is perfect; the setting is perfect; the story, lighting, pace, mood, tone, editing, music, camaraderie, village life details, etc. It doesn't get much better than this. I still prefer The Searcher's, but there can be no doubt that The Quiet Man is a masterpiece in it's own right.
I still remember my shock upon coming across it one night in High School on PBS. Even on a crappy little TV it looked great. It simply stuns on Blu-Ray. Needless to say, that night in high school I stayed up way past my bedtime.
