Review of The Quiet American (2002) by Ray D — 10 Feb 2008
Brendan Fraser is actually a pretty good actor. Case in point, this adaption of Graham Greene's novel about the start of the Vietnam war. The central metaphor, with an older, tired Englishman and a younger, idealistic American fighting over a beautiful Vietnamese woman isn't that subtle, but it doesn't have to be, thanks to the strong performances from Fraser and Do Hai Yen, as well as the always reliable Michael Caine.
The cinematography is well, making Saigon and surroundings look lush and impossibly verdant--seen from an outsider's eyes, one can imagine how easy it woudl be for Fraser or Caine to fall in love with it.
Worth watching either as a character drama, or as a meditation on the problems with 20th century colonialism.
