Review of The Quiet American (2002) by Jordan T — 13 Jun 2009
One of the film's unfairly censored at the time of its release due to the 9/11 attacks, and one that is mostly unheard of I'd bet. Michael Caine got an Oscar nom for his performance which was as always stellar.
A little creepy to see him in a relationship with a teenage Vietnamese girl, but oh well. They give away the ending right at the beginning of the movie (a major drawback), but it works because you know nothing of the dead man's character at the time.
Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser are both neither good or bad, and if they are they don't remain that way throughout. That was the most interesting part, seeing what each man's true colors were by film's end.
It has a slight anti-American tone with the accusations of Fraser aiding the communist party in Saigon, but for the film to be pulled from theaters in its early release was just ridiculous. The musical score is very nice and it's a decent watch overall, but one that doesn't give you much to look forward to with the flashback beginning.
