Review of The Quiet American (2002) by Aaron B — 22 Feb 2010
Very good, old-fashioned movie about Vietnam. I liked it mostly for the great performances by Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser, who disproves any claims against his acting abilities with this level, nuanced character.
In fact, the movie hinges on Fraser's performance and it's really shocking to watch and understand how well he pulls it off. The movie as a whole presents a Vietnamese woman as a symbol of Vietnam the country, and while that might sound trite, it works pretty well.
The performances and the story carry enough weight that we buy it, as well as the symbolism of our own war.
