Review of The Quiet American (2002) by Rainer K — 28 Mar 2012
The Quiet American has one of the more interesting backdrops I've seen lately. It takes place in Vietnam of the 1950s midst of the First Vietnam War when the French try to retain their former colony in which various communist and separatist groups fight for independence.
The story centers on a British journalist (Michael Caine - exceptional as always) and his mistress and their love triangle with an American (supposedly an aid worker).
What starts as a genre mix of love story and political drama ends in the exposure of an American intrigue to strengthen their position in Vietnam (actions which would later cause the Second Vietnam War).
It's beautifully shot and decently acted and you really get an idea how much stuff was going on back then.
Only a few things will never change - opium and whores.
