Review of The Quiet (2005) by Philip W — 11 Feb 2008
A critical and box office failure, I do not see where The Quiet went wrong. I thought it was exceptionally good in almost every aspect, save for the minor cheese factor in some of the dialogue and plot turns. Camilla Belle doesn't need to say a word for most of the movie to stand out above her costar Cuthbert, along with everyone else involved.
The story is incredibly disturbing, and to explain it would give away a lot of the plot turns. The majority of the film will likely leave the viewer a little uncomfortable, but that is just what it aims to do. The soft and subtle blue shade throughout most of the movie brings a sad and somewhat tranquil feel. Babbit, whose resume is filled primarily with directing TV shows, really brings a realistic and effective mood to the table. The plot is gripping and kept my attention. Overall, The Quiet had exceeded my low expectations and I am pleased with the results.
