Review of The Quiet (2005) by Daniel S — 26 Feb 2010
This movie floored me. As a fan of some of Jamie Babbit's work, I had no idea she could wow me like THIS. Not for anyone who can't deal with "sensitive material". Secrets, lies, teen angst and incestuous behaviors are just the tip of the iceberg. It's brutal, twisted and full of surprises. The performances by Camilla Belle, Elisha Cuthbert, Edie Falco and Martin Donovan are captivating and at times, difficult to watch. Also -the cinematography!- the use of soft and contrasting lighting creates a haunting world for these characters who live in a "typical suburban neighborhood".
The only thing I found a bit distracting is the use of voice over as exposition. It seemed a bit heavy handed at times. The standard filmmaking mantra, " Don't tell it, show it!", could have been utilized more.
Overall, a great film! I have no idea why there is no award info on the IMDB page! it should have gotten more notoriety!
If you enjoyed "American Beauty", you'll definitely be impressed by this film!
