Review of The Quick and the Dead (1995) by Jay L — 14 Nov 2011
"In this town you're either one or the other.".
A visually striking comic-book, post-modern, western hybrid from Director Sam Raimi (For Love Of The Game, The Spiderman Trilogy). A unique and dazzling mixture of old school Sergio Leone concepts and searingly inventive action and gunfights. A fast-moving, unwavering full-clip of sheer intensity that's an incredible blast to watch, yes, the Western is an obsolete genre, but The Quick And The Dead resurrects everything that made the old-school genre so great. Explosive, bullet-riddled, clip-emptying action entertainment that entertains to the fullest extent. It's not one of Raimi's best, but his imaginative visual style is seriously cool to watch and the story isn't all that bad either. The gunfights are very well choreographed, the action-sequences are plenty, the blood spills in gallons and it's always good to see the western back on the big screen. An awesome film, the sets, the costumes and everything else in between make this a must-see for any fan of the action/western genre. A great mid 90's post-modern western that's highly enjoyable and was very well made, Sam Raimi once again has suceeded in providing me with 2 hours of nonstop entertainment.
The cast is unusually strong including great performances from Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe and Sharkn Stone. A hugely talented cast that's just a blast to watch throughout, this many superstars in one movie is without any doubt quite rare. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.
