Review of The Queen of Versailles (2012) by Ben S — 27 Nov 2012
This engaging documentary about the struggles of the super rich follows â~Time-share Kingâ(TM) David Siegel and his extraordinary ex-beauty queen wife Jackie and their quest to build a 90,000 sq ft replica of the Palace of Versailles in Floridaâ¦â¦.
until the recession hits and the Siegels have to reassess and make do with just the 17 bathrooms. At times itâ(TM)s too close to an MTV âLiving with theâ¦â? type show, but itâ(TM)s the candid interviews with David, Jackie and their staff that make it a much more rewarding watch.
In the words of Siegel himself, itâ(TM)s a âriches-to-ragsâ? story, which despite the shallow and greedy subjects still manages to elicit a degree of sympathy â" but never has wealth seemed so unappealing.
