Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Tore F — 25 Oct 2007
The charming romance becomes a little silly because of the film's real topic: the ontology of film and the conditions of film consumption (not production). This is a film comedy, not a comedy film (or maybe just derivatively so).
The main character's confused love-life is just as confused as the reality-fiction distinction. While being confused, however, she is surprisingly clearheaded, a downright heroine as the several types of realities catch up with her.
- Seeing this, I for the first time dreamt of being a *filmed* actor, but only while a "film gate" is open, mind you. The film's Morale? Maybe that the hyperreal is more real in ways we hadn't thought of, whether we decide to stick to the real or the fictitious.
Hehe. Highly recommended.
