Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Joy D — 08 Jun 2008
Excruciatingly boring...corny... The theme of domestic violence and a woman using the movies as a mental escape from her grim reality was painfully frustrating to watch. Compare this to the movie "Enough" and the idea of women taking charge of their own lives instead of returning to their pathetic abusive husbands.
Hated the ending because you just KNOW she's going to go back to the jerk because she is so simple-minded that she doesn't have the capacity to consider anything else that is realistic or practical.
As far as whatever message Woody Allen was trying to convey about movies and their role in people's lives...very weak attempt...I was a little frustrated at having wasted my time on this movie...
