Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Scott A — 15 Jun 2013
Maybe the most Un-Woody Allen, Woody Allen Film, I have ever seen. For starters he isn't in it, and the lead, Mia Farrow isn't the neurotic lead Allen's films tend to have.
She's actually quite adorable. And he and Daniels are pretty great together.
The story of Daniels' movie character coming out of the movie and wanting to stay in the REAL world with her was quite cute, but I found the best stuff to be the rest of the movie cast not knowing how to move on without one of the film's stars, so they basically spend the 'movie' sitting talking to the audience who paid to see the real movie itself.
Daniels also plays the actor that played the character in the REAL world, but his Daniels is kind of a douche and does things for selfish reasons.
Both roles are good, and in the end, you really do feel for Farrow. Stuck with a man that doesn't respect her and no job, did she have to go back to that life.
I started wondering if any of this film even happened to begin with. Maybe it was all in her head while she was watching the movie for the fifth time. After all, isn't that why we go to the movies? To escape into worlds that cannot exist in our own lives?
