Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Melcandy - — 15 Aug 2009
I like the premise of this movie, and really enjoyed the first 20 minutes or so. It started to get old partway through, but redeemed itself with a good ending. I think it wouldn't have worked if it were more than 80 minutes.
It's pretty clear from some of Woody Allen's films that he has a love and respect for movies and it's nice to see that shine through. He made a very smart choice to use Top Hat as the movie that plays in the beginning and end.
It was one of the best examples of an escape movie for people in the Depression era.
