Review of The Purge: Election Year (2016) by Andrew K — 02 Jul 2016
Writer Director James DeMonaco has simultaneously proven for the third time his knack for generating unique concepts and the incompetence to take full advantage of them. The Purge: Election Year should have been the greatest film in the series but as it stands, it is clearly the most disappointing.
The dialogue, the characters, everything falls flat. The "high brow" message feels as if it could be better and it appears to have been scripted by an idiot, unable to give the politics the sting it deserves.
It's almost as if he doesn't really get why people want to see Purge movies. The mask characters are given so little screen time that they're almost non existent, which makes me weep for the spectacular costume department.
There's just nothing of substance in the entirety of the film. The only thing the Purge 3 can claim over it's predecessors is it's bizarre racism.
