Review of The Purge: Election Year (2016) by Jack W — 30 Jun 2016
It finally took three movies for the Purge series to get it right. The Purge movies should not be horror films like the first one, it should be a disturbing action thriller about living in hellish society and dystopian future where murder is legal for 12 hours once a year.
The Purge: Election Year brings back Leo from the second film, as well as some well developed new characters such as idealistic Senator Charlie Roan. She wants to eliminate the Purge if she becomes President, so the New Founding Fathers of America change the rules and come after her.
The result is a fast paced action thriller that pushes the more disturbing murder scenes to the back burner, so the main focus of the story is brought to fruition. The grotesque imagery is still there, but the movie stays on its path.
The film's only weakness is a simplistic plot, and shoddy amateurish camera work and editing. The camera goes into shaky cam mode for no reason and the editing jumps around too much. If this is to be the last of the Purge movies, at least it went out on a decent note.
