Review of The Purge (2013) by David B — 15 Jan 2015
Probably the best movie idea in a long time, unfortunately the idea is flawed. Why is the movie based on the family when this could easily be based on the President. Afteral, ANYONE could commit a crime, even the US President.
The actors do very well with what was a good start but ended very weakly. Direction was weak but the blame is still on the script. If The Purge is as far-sighted as Network proved to be, we are in for very ugly times.
That old horror-movie standard, a homestead besieged by psychos, gets remixed with a bit of Occupy-era class-conflict satire in the disappointing future-set thriller The Purge. Instead of being a creepy B-movie about the necessity of suppressing one's animalistic urges, "The Purge" is just a product of uninspired filmmaking.
A great idea that was weak and could've been better, shame, as it's these movies miss out on a great idea. Good enough for a sequel it seems.
