Review of The Purge (2013) by Thomas A — 29 Jan 2015
Despite the hypothetical nature, this film shows a somewhat realistic scenario of what USA would look like under a totalitarian regime that loathes the poor (Oh wait...we're close to that point already! But I digress). I would have given this film 4.5 stars, if not for the fact that some of the suspense-building in the story can be awfully slow that it might be annoying for some people to watch.
So basically, "The Purge" claims to show how all crimes are legal for 12 hours a year. However, the story ends up showing how the rich are all hiding behind the strong barricade of their gated mansions while the poor are left without any form of protection whatsoever. Hence, the real suspense-builder hinges on what the Sandin family decides to do as one of them let a homeless man (who was being sought for execution) inside their house.
This is thus an interesting critique of a society with policies that have gone wrong, and I would recommend it to anyone studying law or social issues in general.
