Review of The Punisher (2004) by Dion J — 27 Jan 2010
The punisher is as subtle as a shot to the face, and about as fun. Very little about it convinces, not the plot, not the direction, not the acting (although Ben Foster is as gloriously eccentric as ever), not the potential love interest, not even the action, which should be a movie like this' strong point. While generally macabre to the point of being depressing, Hensleigh apparently didn't have the courage of his convictions, and on rare occasions attempts to lighten things up with a joke or a slice of cartooniness that just feels jarringly out of place. He also shies away from the inner workings of the punisher himself. What could have been a complex and deeply amoral anti-hero is merely yet another relentless killing machine spouting bad, bad one liners. 'Go with God,' says one character. 'God's going to sit this one out,' quips Castle.
You should too.
