Review of The Punisher (2004) by Neil D — 12 Aug 2013
Thankfully, The Punisher isn't overdirected, unlike the 2006 Max Payne movie. That said, it doesn't do much to stand out from its by-the-numbers revenge formula.
While Thomas Jane is well casted, the acting from him and the cast overall feels uneven and vacant of emotions. The movie could've also done with better writing.
Some scenes feel a bit drawn out, which prolongs the formulaic plot. The action sequences at least somewhat make up for it, along with occasional humor and some over-the-top stunts. I felt that the main character took his revenge a bit too far, and the police don't seem to follow up on all of the bloodshed, especially since the Punisher does show his face to the public at some point.
Last but not least, the musical score is okay, though nothing spectacular. One of the drawn out scenes did feature a neat song played by one of the bad guys.
I can't say I loved this film, but it isn't the worst of comic book adaptations. Passably entertaining.
