Review of The Puffy Chair (2006) by Johnny M — 06 Jan 2009
Shot with surprising clarity for such a lo-fi affair; at times downtempo realistic and provocative (that's what this whole 'mumblecore' thing is about right?); but suffers from the temptation to push all emotional interactions to the breaking point and explosive climax.
Sometimes clever (the 'vertigo' shot on the moving van is nicely wiseass amateur), sometimes great (Amber's face obscuring Emily's during Josh's vicarious vows), but at the end, sitcom contrivances and inconsequential slice-of-life naturalism detract from a mildly enjoyable road trip film.
The Duplass Brothers know the shapes and forms of a relationship--but so, I imagine, do other people; as artists, they'll have to learn to say something, rather than just depict it for-the-most-part honestly.
