Review of The Public Enemy (1931) by James Joseph L — 24 Jun 2009
A great gangster flick with many memorable scenes. One especially is the gun shop scene, which is later homaged in Terminator and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The grapefruit scene is very famous and the movie is great.
James Cagney gives the performance of a lifetime, playing a very deep and troubled character. He just steals the scene, even in the ending shootout. There were also many other scenes, for example the new Cape Fear has DeNiro walking towards the camera, and Cagney did it first.
An influential gangster classic.
